چکیده

We show that the intersection of three subgroups in a free group is related to the computation of the third homotopy group π3. This generalizes a result of Gutierrez-Ratcliffe who relate the intersection of two subgroups with the computation of π2. Let K be a twodimensional CW-complex with subcomplexes K1,K2,K3 such that K = K1 ∪ K2 ∪ K3 and K1 ∩ K2 ∩ K3 is the 1-skeleton K of K. We construct a natural homomorphism of π1(K)modules π3(K) → R1 ∩R2 ∩R3 [R1, R2 ∩R3][R2, R3 ∩R1][R3, R1 ∩R2] , where Ri = ker{π1(K1) → π1(Ki)}, i = 1, 2, 3 and the action of π1(K) = F/R1R2R3 on the right hand abelian group is defined via conjugation in F . In certain cases, the defined map is an isomorphism. Finally, we discuss certain applications of the above map to group homology.

On Symmetric Commutator Subgroups, Braids, Links and Homotopy Groups

In this paper, we investigate some applications of commutator subgroups to homotopy groups and geometric groups. In particular, we show that the intersection subgroups of some canonical subgroups in certain link groups modulo their symmetric commutator subgroups are isomorphic to the (higher) homotopy groups. This gives a connection between links and homotopy groups. Similar results hold for br...

Combinatorial group theory and the homotopy groups of finite complexes

A description of homotopy groups of the 2-dimensional sphere in terms of combinatorial group theory was discovered by the second author in 1994 and given in his thesis [25], with a published version in [27]. In this article we give a combinatorial description of the homotopy groups of k-dimensional spheres with k ≥ 3. The description is given by identifying the homotopy groups as the center of ...

non-divisibility for abelian groups

Throughout all groups are abelian. We say a group G is n-divisible if nG = G. If G has no non-zero n-divisible subgroups for all n>1 then we say that G is absolutely non-divisible. In the study of class C consisting   all absolutely non-divisible groups such as G, we come across the sub groups T_p(G) = the sum of all p-divisible subgroups and rad_p(G) = the intersection of all p^nG. The proper...

Subgroups of Free Metabelian Groups

In 1954 A. G. Howson proved that the intersection of two finitely generated subgroups of a free group is again finitely generated. Now the free metabelian subgroups of a free metabelian group of finite rank n are quite restricted. Indeed they are again of finite rank at most n. This suggests that there may be an analog of Howson’s theorem for free metabelian groups. This turns out not to be the...

Intersections of conjugates of Magnus subgroups of one-relator groups

In the theory of one-relator groups, Magnus subgroups, which are free subgroups obtained by omitting a generator that occurs in the given relator, play an essential structural role. In a previous article, the author proved that if two distinct Magnus subgroups M and N of a one-relator group, with free bases S and T are given, then the intersection of M and N is either the free subgroup P genera...
